A.S. Lyon's unpublished diary provides great insight into the world of nineteenth-century England, Jamaica, and beyond. The records of his frequent visits to the theatre illuminate an important part of his life and a dominant cultural institution of the time. In history, Lyon is remembered as a businessman and traveler, but his dedication to the arts and performance is largely forgotten. Examining Lyon's relationship with the arts and performance culture in London further one's understanding of Lyon's diary, the world in which he lived, and depictions of his character development.
